Skincare Regimen at Home

You hear a lot of mixed messages when it comes to skincare at home. I want to try and make it as simple as possible… because if its too many steps, lets face it, you won’t do it. Doing your skincare at home is just as important, if not more, than getting in-office treatments. You touch your face twice a day… a facial or treatment is once a month. You have 59 extra times to apply quality, science-proven products.

The four basics that everyone needs in their routine include: face wash, antioxidant, retinol, and sun protection. A double cleanse should always be done at night to ensure all of your makeup and sunscreen are removed before bedtime. In general, anything that you like and you feel is effective. Right now, my favorite is the Pavīse Gentle Amino Powerwash. Pavīse also has a daytime product that is hydrating, works well under makeup, provides antioxidants stronger than Vitamin C, and protects against the sun, called Dynamic Age Defense.

Retinols are derivates of Vitamin A. They help will cell turnover, which is a fancy way of saying they help your skin cells turn over quicker. Think back to when you were a kid and you got a scratch, it healed itself in just a few days. As we age, the cell-turnover rate slows down. Topical Vitamin A helps to speed that process up. In turn, it helps with pigment, fine lines, wrinkles, acne, etc. The problem that most people encounter when trying a retinol, is that their skin can’t tolerate it very well. They get itchy, peeling, burning, and people aren’t consistent with using it every night. As far as retinols go, my go-to line is Skin Better. The AlphaRet collection has never caused irritation, redness, flaking, or sensitivities for me. They have a few varieties of products depending on what your skin type is. For beginners, I suggest the AlphaRet Overnight cream, then if you can tolerate that, move up to the Intensive AlphaRet Overnight. For acne prone skin, I suggest the AlphaRet Clearing.

It’s important that if you are using a retinol at night, it is IMPERATIVE that you wear sunscreen during the day. If you’re looking for something on those “no-makeup” days, the DAD from Pavīse is great. I like to switch it up between that and the Skin Better SunBetter Tone Smart SPF. The SPF blends in great for most skin types and gives you more coverage than other tinted SPFs on the market. Plus it is 75 SPF and PA++++ with 80+ min of water resistance.
